The most common mistake new archers make is buying too much bow. A draw weight that feels manageable for ten arrows in a shop feels very different after fifty arrows in a full session, and shooting consistently over-weight leads to poor form and fatigue that's hard to undo later. Most adult beginners do well starting somewhere between 15–25lb depending on build and fitness — you can always move up as your strength and technique develop.
Recurves are generally the most forgiving starting point and what most clubs teach on first, though a lighter longbow or flatbow suits some beginners just as well. Our beginner's guide to archery covers stance, grip, and the basics of instinctive aiming if you want a primer before your first session.
