PRIMITIVE FLATBOW DESIGN, BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE
Nick has designed a flatbow to meet the needs and desires of traditional archers seeking an efficient and rewarding bow to shoot, but also a shooting experience reaching back to very depths of the origins of archery across the world and in time.
Inspirations for this bow are truly cross-cultural drawing upon ancient northern European designs dating back to the end of the last ice-age, and North American native bows from across that continent.
He started with a design known as the pyramid bow – a flatbow design that is possibly almost as old as archery itself which by simple practical mechanical principles, maximises speed and efficiency of the basic straight-limbed wooden bow. He then incorporated increased limb taper and static levers at the limb-tips in the fashion of the ancient 9,000-year-old Holmegaard and Molegabet flatbows from Denmark.
Nicks design, however, is less extreme than those bows in that respect and in that way takes its inspiration from some native American designs. This feature further enhances the speed and smoothness of draw by allowing a shorter heavier limb to be drawn for the same arrow length.
